"S.A.S.S."
Janet's project, "S.A.S.S." (Student Abolitionists Stopping Slavery), seeks to educate the public about the mostly hidden global issue of human trafficking. As president of "S.A.S.S.," Janet has traveled to national and international conferences to raise awareness about modern-day slavery, which has reached epidemic proportions. Every year "S.A.S.S." holds an Abolitionist Fair to present the issue to students and faculty. She has raised close to $1,500 for NGOs (non-governmental organizations) that fight against slavery, such as Free the Slaves and iAbolish. "S.A.S.S." has also successfully organized a petition in support of a Connecticut law to outlaw human trafficking and to create a task force within the state. Janet hopes to one day become a leading expert on modern day slavery and to increase awareness about this topic.
